This month, we’re spotlighting Welding Month, where we take a closer look at the trade and the challenges that come with working in the construction engineering field. In this Q&A, Brondy Mandlazi, one of our welders at New Age Engineering Solutions, shares her experiences and practical insights, giving you a real behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to succeed.

1. How did you enter the trade you are currently in?

I was introduced to welding by my sister-in-law at a time when I wasn’t doing much, so I decided to give it a try. I had no idea that it would mark the beginning of my journey in this industry. I’m grateful to God for how far I’ve come, and I’m committed to staying focused and growing stronger every day in this field.

2. How would you describe your career journey here at New Age?

I began working for the company in 2022 during the shutdown period. In the beginning, it wasn’t easy. The industry is largely dominated by men, and there were moments when I felt I had to work harder to prove myself. However, with time, things began to improve. I grew more comfortable in my role and gained confidence, and I believe that’s when everything started to change.

3. How was your first plant shutdown experience?

It was challenging at the beginning because it was my first time being exposed to site work. However, as time went on, things improved. I became more familiar with the site environment and, slowly but surely, I gained confidence.

4. What are the challenges that you experienced during the plant shutdown?

The most challenging part for me was comparing myself to the experienced workers who were doing exceptionally well. When I saw the high quality of their work, I sometimes doubted myself and wondered if welding was really meant for a woman like me. However, with time, things improved. The experienced workers supported and guided me, and I’m truly grateful for the help they gave me along the way.

5. How did you overcome some of those challenges?

I overcame some of the challenges by staying curious and continuing to learn while seeking mentorship from experienced welders.

6. What do you enjoy most about working as a welder?

The sparks, and the craft of joining two pieces of metal together into a strong, solid unit.

7. What are some of the key skills or traits that have helped you succeed in your career?

Understanding different welding techniques and knowing how to apply them properly has played a big role in my success.

8. What are your career goals here within New Age?

I’m pushing for continuous growth. Growth is the key to success in any trade, and welding is no different. I’m committed to constantly improving my skills and the way I work.

9. How did it feel to be recognised for your performance as one of the valued employees for NAES?

It boosts my morale as my work is acknowledged and appreciated. It boosts my confidence, making me feel more invested in my role.

10. What are some of the key lessons you’ve learned during your time at NAES?

Working at NAES has taught me how to adapt and adjust to new challenges and changes in the workplace.
